Mojo revival and an opera residency lead Park Theatre's 2027 season

Artwork for Park Theatre's 2027 Park200 season: The Captain, Jimmy, Spitfire Girls, Mojo, Gianni Schicchi, The Wedding(s), The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc and the Papatango New Writing Prize winner Park Theatre has set out its 2027 Park200 season: seven productions between January and November, among them the first London revival of Jez Butterworth's Mojo in 14 years, an opera residency from OperaUpClose and the first play by comedy double act Max & Ivan.

The Park Theatre in Finsbury Park has its main-stage programme for 2027 in place, running from January to late November. Artistic director Jez Bond and executive director Catherine McKinney announced it on 5 October. New writing takes up most of the slate. The headline items are Mojo, back in London for the first time since 2013, and a spring residency from OperaUpClose that takes Park200 into opera.

The Captain and Jimmy, January

Adam Riches opens the year with The Captain, from 12-23 January 2027. The play won a Fringe First in 2026. Its subject is Captain Matthew Webb, the first man to swim the English Channel, and it is as interested in the man as in the swim. Riches writes and performs it, Tom Parry directs, and Park Theatre and Tigco produce.

In the same fortnight Riches revives Jimmy, his solo show about the tennis player Jimmy Connors, for six performances only from 14-23 January 2027. Its January 2026 run at the theatre sold out. The piece follows Connors from the top of the game in 1974 to the comeback he mounted at the 1991 US Open. Parry directs again, and Tigco presents it in association with Park Theatre.

Spitfire Girls, January to February

Katherine Senior's Spitfire Girls follows with its London premiere, from 27 January - 27 February 2027, press night Thursday 28 January. The London dates sit inside the play's third UK tour. Seán Aydon directs.

The play draws on true stories of the women of the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War. It is set on New Year's Eve 1959, when two women the war pulled apart meet again in a pub called The Spitfire, and the action moves back to their years in the air. Developed with support from the National Theatre's Generate programme, it opened at MAST Mayflower Southampton in March 2025. The cast includes Hannah Morrison, Katherine Senior, Kirsty Cox, Paul Brown and Daniel Copeland.

Mojo, March to April

Jez Butterworth's Mojo runs from 4 March - 10 April 2027, with press night on Wednesday 10 March. It is the play's first London revival since the 2013 West End production. Max Harrison directs and Kit Hinchcliffe designs for Park Theatre and Lidless Theatre. Casting and the rest of the creative team will follow.

Mojo was Butterworth's first play. It opened at the Royal Court in 1995, won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy, and brought him the George Devine Award and the Evening Standard Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright, long before Jerusalem, The Ferryman and The Hills of California. It is set in a Soho club, the Atlantic, in the 1950s. When the owner is murdered, the people left behind fight over who runs the place and who controls its young rock 'n' roll star, Silver Johnny.

Gianni Schicchi, April to May

OperaUpClose takes over Park200 from 14 April - 8 May 2027 with Gianni Schicchi (or Where There's A Will), press night Tuesday 20 April. It marks a new opera strand for the theatre and a sizeable London return for the company.

Hannah Kumari has rewritten Puccini's family farce and Vahan Salorian has re-orchestrated it, turning it into a 65-minute comic murder mystery with a present-day setting. The action moves to Harmouth, an invented seaside town, where a rich second-home owner is hosting a last party of the season and things start to slide once the local fixer, Gianni Schicchi, gets involved. The White Lotus and Knives Out are cited as influences. PJ Harris, a 2025 Sky Arts Award winner, directs, with design by Anna Yates. The staging was originally co-produced with Mayflower Southampton.

The Wedding(s), May to July

Comedy double act Max & Ivan make their theatre debut with The Wedding(s), their first play, in a world premiere from 27 May - 3 July 2027. Press night is Wednesday 2 June. The pair, whose credits include W1A, The Casebook of Max & Ivan and Deep Heat, also star, alongside an ensemble of comic actors. Wildpark Entertainment presents it in association with Park Theatre.

The show's own line is "Two weddings. One venue. Same day. Ah." Brothers Dan and Gerry pour their savings into turning the crumbling Winter Hall into a wedding venue, then discover they have booked two ceremonies into the same slot on opening day: the society match of the Manleys and the Fairfaxes, and the shotgun wedding of Lizzie and Becca.

The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc, July to August

Carol Schneider's The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc has its world premiere from 9 July - 7 August 2027, press night Wednesday 14 July, directed by Joe Cacaci. It adds to the theatre's growing run of Deaf-led and accessible work on the main stage, which currently includes BULL, co-produced with Deafinitely Theatre.

The play opens in 1816, as the Deaf pioneer Laurent Clerc crosses from France to America. With the young Reverend Thomas Gallaudet he sets out to build a school for Deaf children, then puts it at risk by announcing that he means to marry a Deaf woman. It is staged through movement, mime and shadow, four modalities of sign language, spoken English and French, and creative captions. The National Theatre supported its development, and earlier versions of the project won awards and inspired an award-winning documentary.

The cast includes Alim Jadavji, Zoë McWhinney, Natalia Campbell and Luna Tosin. Christopher Tester is associate director and Deepa Shastri is Director of Artistic Sign Language, with sets by Calypso Michelet, costumes by Gabriela Correia, and video and captions by Ben Glover. Dreamatorium, Berkshire Playwrights Lab and Park Theatre present.

The 2026 Papatango New Writing Prize winner, October to November

The season ends on a play nobody can name yet. Papatango and Park Theatre team up again for the world premiere of the 2026 Papatango New Writing Prize winner, from 28 October - 27 November 2027, with press night planned for Monday 1 November. The winning script was chosen from a record 1,913 entries, and its title is revealed on 20 October 2026. Booking is open before then. The companies' first joint premiere, The Meat Kings! (Inc.) of Brooklyn Heights, went on to win the 2026 Susan Smith Blackburn Award.

Jez Bond said: "What excites me most is the breadth of storytelling and the range of artists we’re welcoming to Park Theatre — established names alongside new voices, familiar titles alongside stories audiences may be discovering for the first time. I’m really looking forward to sharing the season with our audiences."
