Little Dancer releases rehearsal-room music video with Julian Ovenden and Laura Pitt-Pulford

Key art for Little Dancer: a ballerina leaps above a Paris street at dusk while a young dancer in a tutu looks on Little Dancer has released its first music video, filmed in the rehearsal room, with Julian Ovenden and Laura Pitt-Pulford singing Marie / C’est Le Ballet ahead of the new musical’s run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

A rehearsal room, a grand piano and two voices. The first music video from Little Dancer was shot well away from the stage, and it hands the floor to Julian Ovenden and Laura Pitt-Pulford for Marie / C’est Le Ballet, a number from the score.

Both singers are Olivier nominees. Ovenden plays Edgar Degas and Pitt-Pulford plays Adult Marie, with Josefina Gabrielle as Martine. At the head of the company is Tiler Peck, the New York City Ballet principal dancer, Emmy winner and Olivier nominee, in a rare stretch of London performances. Her casting was announced in October.

The musical starts from a real sitter. Marie van Goethem was fourteen, poor and a young dancer in Belle Époque Paris when Degas made her the subject of his famous sculpture, and she has held that pose ever since. The show follows the girl and the artist together: two people chasing art and ambition in a city where glamour and cruelty shared the same streets.

Susan Stroman directs and choreographs. Lynn Ahrens wrote the book and lyrics and Stephen Flaherty the music. Design comes from Beowulf Boritt (set), Ken Billington (lighting), William Ivey Long (costumes), Kai Harada (sound), Sam Cox (wigs, hair and make-up) and Benjamin Pearcy for 59, a Journey Studio (projection). Doug Besterman and Larry Hochman provide the orchestrations, Sam Davis the music supervision and dance arrangements, and Jill Green Casting, CDG the casting.

The piece already has a track record. It played sold-out runs in Washington D.C. and Seattle, and a sold-out concert performance at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2025. The London staging is produced by Anita Waxman (lead producer), Jana Shea, Patricia R. Klausner / Sharon A. Carr, Iwan Lewis (UK executive producer), Emily Blavatnik and Danny Cohen, with general management by Short Street Productions Ltd.

Earlier this week the production also posted a short teaser on its own YouTube channel:
