Little Dancer: A New Musical description
Little Dancer is a new musical about the teenage ballet student who became the model for Edgar Degas' famous sculpture of a young dancer.
In Belle Époque Paris, Marie van Goethem is fourteen, poor and set on becoming a great dancer. When Degas chooses her as his model, the two are drawn together by art and ambition, in a city where glamour and hardship sit side by side. The musical follows the girl and the painter as each pursues their art whatever the cost, and asks whether we shape our own destiny or are shaped by it.
The show has already had sold-out runs in Washington D.C. and Seattle, and a concert performance at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2025 also sold out. The Theatre Royal Haymarket season is its original West End production, ahead of a planned world tour. Its director, Susan Stroman, calls it "a visually stunning and life-affirming piece of theater about the lives of women and the power of art."
The book and lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens and the music is by Stephen Flaherty, the Olivier and Tony Award-winning partnership behind Ragtime, Anastasia and Once on This Island. Susan Stroman, a five-time Tony Award and two-time Olivier Award winner whose credits include The Producers, Crazy for You, Contact and Oklahoma!, directs and choreographs. Sets are by Beowulf Boritt, costumes by William Ivey Long, lighting by Ken Billington and sound by Kai Harada.
Tiler Peck, a principal dancer with New York City Ballet, makes her West End debut in the production. She won an Emmy Award for the documentary Tiler Peck: Suspending Time and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Turn It Out with Tiler Peck and Friends. Olivier Award nominee Julian Ovenden (High Society, South Pacific, Downton Abbey) plays Edgar Degas, Olivier Award nominee Laura Pitt-Pulford (Into the Woods, Standing at the Sky's Edge, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) plays Adult Marie, and Josefina Gabrielle (High Society, Chicago, Les Misérables) plays Martine.
