Parasocial Activity, the dark comedy that won Briony Martha a Fringe First in Edinburgh this summer, gets its London premiere at Southwark Playhouse Borough in January.
Parasocial Activity plays The Little, the smaller of the two auditoriums at Southwark Playhouse Borough, from 13-30 January 2027. Press night is 15 January. The run follows the play's Scotsman Fringe First award at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Briony Martha wrote the play and performs it. Her character, Jenny, bumps into James McAvoy in a branch of Costa and is certain from that moment that the pair of them are made for each other. The people around her are less convinced. The comedy turns darker as it asks how far a devotion to someone famous can go once admiration tips into obsession.
McAvoy himself is quoted on the production's own material, calling it "A bloody triumph". The Edinburgh notices were strong too: five stars from Corr Blimey, which called it "Theatre at its best", and from Binge Fringe, which described Martha as "a powerhouse performer", plus four stars from The Scotsman and BroadwayWorld.
Megan Brewer directs, and Arianna Muñoz is sound designer and technician. The production is presented by Gallus Productions and Silly Mission Productions in association with Disruptable Theatre Productions.
Performances are at 7.30pm from Monday to Saturday, with 3pm matinees on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The show runs 1 hour 15 minutes with no interval, and latecomers are not admitted. Standard tickets start at £22, concessions at £18 and previews at £16, and the Pioneers' Preview on 13 January is £10. A captioned performance is scheduled for Thursday 28 January at 7.30pm. The play is recommended for ages 15+ and contains strong language and depictions of mental illness and murder.
Parasocial Activity is booking now at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 13-30 January 2027.
