MJ the Musical description
MJ – A multiple award-winning show
The Producers are Lia Vollack Productions. The Michael Jackson Estate is involved. The multi-Tony Award winning Broadway musical MJ is on stage at London’s Prince Edward Theatre from March 2024 onwards, and it’s already proved a massive hit. This is the second Michael Jackson musical to hit the West End stage, the first being Thriller - Live. Are you ready to know more about the extraordinary musician who conquered the world of disco and changed the meaning of ‘soul’.
What's the story behind MJ?
MJ reveals the background to the artist’s extraordinary Dangerous World Tour in 1992. Focused on the making of the legendary Tour, MJ goes beyond the awesome dance moves and signature sound of Jackson to show us the unique creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted the singer into the limelight and held him there for the rest of his life. Theatre tickets for MJ are predicted to sell like hot cakes so keep your eyes open for their release in spring 2023.
The book comes from the twice-Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, who wowed us with Ruined, and Sweat, and there’s a top class creative team on board. The cast will be announced nearer the time.
MJ is being directed and choreographed by the Royal Ballet Associate Artist Christopher Wheeldon OBE. He won a Tony Award for Best Choreography of a Musical for MJ, having already won awards for his work on An American in Paris and more.
Costume Design comes from another Tony and Emmy winner, Paul Tazewell, who worked on Hamilton, and the Sound Design is by the Tony and Olivier winning Gareth Owen, responsible for sound on Come From Away. Scenic Design comes from the Tony Award and two Emmy Award winning Derek McLane, who also worked on Moulin Rouge! The Musical.
The Lighting Design comes from the six Tony Award winner Natasha Katz, who also worked on Once. Musical Supervision by the Tony nominee David Holcenberg, who worked on Matilda. Orchestrations and Arrangements are by David Holcenberg and another Tony winner, Jason Michael Webb, who scored a big hit with his work on The Color Purple.
Projection Design comes from the two-Tony nominee Peter Nigrini, of Dear Evan Hansen fame, and the Hair and Wig Designer is yet another winner, this time the two-time Emmy nominee Charles LaPointe whose work on The Color Purple helped make the show special.
As the Director and Choreographer Christopher Wheeldon OBE said, "I am thrilled that MJ will come to London, having been embraced by New York audiences since it opened. Michael Jackson had a profound influence on popular culture, as well as all of us as performing artists, and this musical is an exploration of that artistic mind and a creative process which is unmistakably Michael Jackson. It has offered us the opportunity to put one of the greatest catalogues of pop music ever written up onstage in a show that combines the thrill and energy of a Michael Jackson concert with a glimpse into a pivotal moment of his pioneering career. After many years working with the Royal Ballet and bringing the Tony Award winning American In Paris to the West End, I now very much look forward to bringing MJ to UK audiences."
