The Cornley Amateur Dramatic Society attempt Dickens, and Dickens does not survive the attempt.
The company have chosen A Christmas Carol for their festive production, and are determined to do it properly: flying sequences, a revolving set, a company of ghosts and a Scrooge who intends to give the performance of his life. What follows is the usual Cornley combination of collapsing scenery, misfiring effects, forgotten lines and actors who will not leave the stage, arranged so that the disasters build on one another until the whole thing comes apart.
Christmas Carol Goes Wrong comes from Mischief, the company behind The Play That Goes Wrong, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy and has been running in the West End for over a decade, as well as Peter Pan Goes Wrong, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery and The Comedy About Spies. It began as a BBC television special before being rebuilt for the stage, and returns to the West End for a limited festive run alongside an international tour.
The show is written by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, the three founding members of Mischief who also wrote The Play That Goes Wrong, and is directed by Matt DiCarlo.
Casting for this West End run is still to be announced. Mischief productions are built around ensemble timing rather than star names, with the company playing the members of Cornley playing the characters of Dickens, usually badly.
