Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is heading for cinemas: Cameron Mackintosh's production will be filmed in front of a live audience at His Majesty's Theatre, its London home since 1986, and released around the world in 2027.
The cameras will be in the house for the production's biggest night in years. The capture is a co-production between Universal Pictures Content Group (UPCG), Cameron Mackintosh Limited and LW Entertainment, and it is the first time Phantom of the Opera has been filmed at the Haymarket theatre where it opened four decades ago. The international cinema release follows in 2027, with dates still to be announced.
That big night is the 40th anniversary gala on 9 October, when performers from across the show's four decades will join the current cast for a special curtain call, and the film will include it. The anniversary company, first seen in production photographs last month, appears throughout: Jordan Donica plays The Phantom opposite Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé, with Rhys Whitfield as Raoul, Sierra Boggess as Carlotta, Matt Bateman as Piangi, Joseph Millson and Ian Pirie as Monsieur André and Monsieur Firmin, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry and Millie Lyon as Meg.
Behind the camera, Brett Sullivan, whose credits include Hadestown, directs for the screen, and Dione Orrom, producer of Six: The Musical Live!, produces the capture, with UPCG's EVP Helen Parker as executive producer. It keeps the studio in a line of work it already knows: its recent releases include the US cinema run of that same Six film, which followed a strong box office showing in the UK.
The stage run is unaffected. The anniversary company is at His Majesty's until 21 November 2026, with casting beyond that date to come, and the 40th birthday brings a recording as well as a film: Andrew Lloyd Webber's new mix of the 1986 original London cast album, made from the rediscovered analogue master tapes and announced in September, is released digitally on 9 October, with vinyl and CD editions following on 6 November.
Tickets for Phantom of the Opera at His Majesty's Theatre are on sale now for performances until 2 October 2027.
