The Phantom of the Opera will mark forty years in the West End with a gala performance at His Majesty’s Theatre on Friday 9 October 2026. Producer Cameron Mackintosh confirmed the date this morning. Tickets go on sale in late September, in strictly limited numbers.
The date is exact rather than approximate. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical opened at that address on 9 October 1986, when the building still carried the name Her Majesty’s Theatre, and it has never played anywhere else in London.
Alumni artists from across the four decades will join the current company on stage for a special curtain call after the anniversary performance. The production has not yet said who is coming back.
There is no booking link yet, and the gala sits outside the general on-sale. The route to a seat is Lloyd Webber’s The Box Five Club, the show’s own sign-up, which will carry the link once tickets are released. Further detail is promised later in September.
The takings have a destination. All proceeds from gala ticket sales will be matched by both the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and the Mackintosh Foundation, and the combined sum launches a new Phantom 40th Scholarship Programme. It will pay for professional training at leading performing arts schools across the UK, removing barriers to entry for young students heading into music and the performing arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation will run it, and it opens for applications for the 2027-28 academic year, with details of how to apply to follow.
One of the anniversary company has already come that way. Beatrice Penny-Touré, who plays Christine Daaé at the gala, is a former Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation scholar.
That cast is now complete, with Jordan Donica as The Phantom. He is joined by Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé, Rhys Whitfield as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, Sierra Boggess as Carlotta Giudicelli, Matt Bateman as Ubaldo Piangi, Joseph Millson and Ian Pirie as the managers Monsieur André and Monsieur Firmin, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry and Millie Lyon as her daughter Meg. Colleen Rose Curran plays Christine at certain performances.
The full anniversary company performs through until Saturday 21 November 2026. Several contracts run past it: Donica and Curran stay to spring 2027, and Penny-Touré, Bateman and Lyon to Saturday 24 July 2027.
The anniversary is being marked on record as well. Lloyd Webber has gone back to the 1986 analogue masters and remixed the Original London Cast Recording, and the complete digital album arrives on 9 October, the night of the gala.
Regular performances continue in the meantime. The Phantom of the Opera is booking at His Majesty’s Theatre in the Haymarket, with tickets from £25 and no booking fee. Evenings are at 7.30pm Monday to Saturday, with matinees at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday.
