Rehearsal images show Janie Dee and Trevor Nunn at work on Speculations

Janie Dee in rehearsal for Speculations. Rehearsal photographs are out for Speculations, the new Torben Betts thriller that Trevor Nunn is directing at the Marylebone Theatre, with Janie Dee as the journalist Dorothy Kilgallen.

Wild Yak and the Marylebone Theatre released the pictures on Friday 9 October. They show Janie Dee, Trevor Nunn and the company at work on Speculations ahead of its world premiere.

Torben Betts wrote the play. It is set in New York in 1965. Kilgallen, one of America's best-known journalists, is chasing the truth about the deaths of Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald. The closer she gets, the more dangerous her questions become, and the threats eventually reach her own home.

Jolyon Coy plays Robert, Natalie Dunne plays Norma Jean, Gloria Obianyo plays Flo, Joseph Potter plays Lee and Ferdy Roberts plays Carlos. Design is by Lee Newby, lighting by Johanna Town and sound by Gregory Clarke.

Dee is currently playing Laurence in The Truth at the Apollo Theatre. She won an Olivier Award for Comic Potential, a role Alan Ayckbourn wrote for her, and another for Carousel at the National Theatre. Our guide to Speculations has more on the production.

Speculations runs at the Marylebone Theatre, inside Rudolf Steiner House at 35 Park Road, from Friday 30 October 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Press night is Wednesday 4 November 2026.
