Sacrilegious, the first original play from Tom Schulman, the Oscar-winning writer of Dead Poets Society, has been pushed back to the spring. Its world premiere now plays Riverside Studios from 3 April to 29 May 2027, rather than over Christmas as first announced.
The world premiere of Sacrilegious has new dates. Tom Schulman's comedy now opens at Riverside Studios on 3 April 2027 and runs until 29 May. Press night is Tuesday 13 April at 7pm.
It had been due to play from 5 December 2026 to 23 January 2027, the dates given when the venue set out its winter programme. ABS Productions put the move down to unforeseen circumstances and gave no further detail.
The change reorders the Mainstage Season 26/27. Expecting, by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola, now takes the first slot of the new year, from 30 January to 27 March 2027, with John Bradley, Joe Dempsie, Katie Leung and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell in the cast. Sacrilegious follows it straight in. Before either, Affluenza plays until 28 November 2026.
The play is set on the holiest day of the Jewish year. An idealistic young rabbi turns on the billionaire who presides over his congregation, questioning a gift worth millions, and the whole community is dragged into the fight. With $30 million on the table, principle and power go head to head. The artwork puts it in three words: "Power. Persuasion. Pastrami."
It is Schulman's first original stage play. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Dead Poets Society, later turned that film into a play, and also wrote What About Bob? and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Andy Sandberg directs. He is the season's artistic director, stages every production in it, and runs the Hermitage Artist Retreat in the United States.
Casting is still to be announced. Performances are Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with Thursday and Saturday matinees at 2.30pm, and the captioned performance is on Saturday 22 May at 2.30pm. Tickets start at £25, and every seat at the first preview is £25.
The season is presented by ABS Productions, Whitney Edwards, Flora Major, Judith Manocherian, Sondra Biller, Drew & Dane & Whitney and Berman-Cohen Productions, with DEM Productions as general manager and Nicholas Hockaday as season casting director.
Sacrilegious is booking at Riverside Studios from 3 April to 29 May 2027.
