Sacrilegious description
A sharp new comedy about faith, money and the limits of both.
On the holiest day of the year, an idealistic young rabbi does the one thing nobody saw coming: he challenges the billionaire president of his congregation and questions a multi-million-dollar donation. What follows is a razor-sharp contest between principle and power. As reputations unravel and loyalties are tested, the congregation must decide whether morality can survive when there is $30 million on the table.
Sacrilegious is a world premiere and the second production of the Mainstage Season 26/27 at Riverside Studios, a season of five new plays largely set in contemporary America. It is the first original stage play by Tom Schulman, who had previously adapted his own Dead Poets Society for the stage.
The comedy is written by Tom Schulman, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Dead Poets Society, for which he won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and whose films also include What About Bob? and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. It is directed by Andy Sandberg, a Tony Award-winning producer and director and Artistic Director and CEO of the Hermitage Artist Retreat, who directed the UK premieres of Operation Epsilon and Shida. Casting is to be announced.
