Affluenza description
A darkly comic drama about wealth, privilege and the price of getting away with it.
When a teenager's drunken drive ends in devastation, the court case that follows turns on a single, uncomfortable question: can someone be too affluent to know the difference between right and wrong? Set among the ultra-wealthy of the Hamptons and inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defence, Affluenza traces the ripple effects as one family's money, power and reputation collide with the American justice system, raising questions about moral accountability and the generational cost of privilege.
Affluenza is a world premiere and the opening production of the Mainstage Season 26/27 at Riverside Studios - a season of five new plays, largely set in contemporary America and exploring globally relevant themes. It runs for a limited eight-week engagement.
The play is written and directed by Andy Sandberg, a New York-based director, writer and Tony Award-winning producer, and Artistic Director and CEO of the Hermitage Artist Retreat. Sandberg directed the UK premieres of Operation Epsilon and Shida, earning multiple Off-West End Award nominations including Best Director, and in 2009 became the youngest producer to win a Tony Award, for the revival of Hair. Casting is to be announced.
