Kiln Theatre has released the first rehearsal photographs for Nine Night, Amit Sharma's new revival of Natasha Gordon's award-winning play, which starts its run on 12 November.
The pictures are by Mark Senior and show the company at work in the rehearsal room, nine days before the first performance in Kilburn. The run was extended by popular demand in September and now plays until 2 January 2027, with press night on Friday 20 November.
Gordon's play is set during a traditional Jamaican Nine Night, the wake that follows a death. When Gloria dies, three generations of her London family gather under one roof. More mourners keep arriving, bringing food, drink and grievances of their own, and secrets the family would rather keep buried start to surface. Grief and comedy sit side by side, and Sharma, Kiln's Artistic Director and CEO, made no secret of the second when the casting was announced: "And it's funny - boy, is it funny!"
The cast is Sonya Cassidy as Sophie, Estella Daniels as Trudy, Llewella Gideon as Auntie Maggie, Ava Hinds-Jones as Anita, Gary McDonald as Uncle Vincent, Dani Moseley as Lorraine and Javone Prince as Robert. We covered the full casting and the extension when they were confirmed.
Libby Watson designs the set and costumes, with lighting by Rory Beaton and sound and music by Mwen. Kloé Dean is movement director, Hazel Holder and Claudette Williams look after voice and dialect, and casting is by Julia Horan CDG, with Poppy Apter as casting assistant.
Nine Night was Gordon's debut as a playwright. It sold out at the National Theatre in 2018 before a West End transfer, was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Comedy, and won her the Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, along with a Critics' Circle Award.
The production runs at Kiln Theatre, 269 Kilburn High Road, from Thursday 12 November 2026, with tickets from £15 to £45. Access performances include a relaxed matinee on Saturday 12 December 2026, a BSL-interpreted performance on Tuesday 8 December 2026, captioned performances on Thursday 3 and Tuesday 22 December 2026, and an audio-described performance with a touch tour on Thursday 17 December 2026.
