Rose Theatre has released the first production photographs from Three Men in a Boat, the world premiere comedy by Al Smith now running in Kingston upon Thames until Saturday 10 October 2026.
The pictures open where the show does. Four men sit in one battered rowing boat, a painted stretch of the Thames hangs behind them, and a stack of luggage teeters at the stern. Helen Murray’s photographs are the first from Three Men in a Boat in performance, and the first proper look at Simon Kenny’s set and costumes: striped blazers, straw boaters, a wall of circus-red drapes and a dog made of frayed sacking.
The dog is Montmorency, and he is a puppet, worked in full view by Calum Donald-Bruce under puppetry director Chris Pirie. Jonny Weldon plays Jerome, Bronté Barbé plays Harris and Richard David-Caine plays George.
The production is a world premiere, cast in July and first seen in rehearsal photographs at the start of September. Al Smith has written a new comedy from Jerome K. Jerome’s novel, with original songs by Grant Olding, who was Tony-nominated for One Man, Two Guvnors and who is also musical director and sound designer here. Rose Theatre artistic director Christopher Haydon directs.
The physical comedy is built by John Nicholson, credited as movement director and comedy consultant. The rest of the creative team is Simisola Majekodunmi on lighting, Juliet Horsley CDG on casting, Claudette Williams as voice and dialect coach, and Rebecca Wear as associate director, the Drama League Rose Directing Fellow.
Three Men in a Boat runs at the Rose Theatre, 24-26 High Street, Kingston upon Thames, until Saturday 10 October 2026.
