The Barn Theatre production of Million Dollar Quartet will visit 23 venues between January and July 2027, opening at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 26 January. Darren Day leads the touring company as Sam Phillips.
A UK tour of Million Dollar Quartet opens at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 26 January 2027, the first of 23 dates announced today by Built by Barn and Steve Spiegel for TRW Production. The tour runs until 17 July and reaches receiving houses from Aberdeen to Portsmouth.
Leading the touring company is Darren Day, cast as Sam Phillips, the producer credited with creating the sound of rock ’n’ roll. Jonathan O’Boyle directs, from a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux.
The announcement comes with the production’s London season already under way. Following an extended summer run at the Barn Theatre in Cirencester, Million Dollar Quartet transferred to London and runs at The Arts at Marble Arch: powered by TodayTix from 4 September until 6 December 2026. That leaves the company on stage on 4 December, seventy years to the day after the recording session the musical is built on.
The evening it reconstructs was an accident. On 4 December 1956 Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley found themselves in the same Memphis studio by chance, and the jam session that followed helped set the direction of rock ’n’ roll. The musical stages that night as it happens, egos and broken promises included, and works through Blue Suede Shoes, Fever, Walk The Line and Hound Dog on the way.
Alongside O’Boyle, the creative team has choreography by Joanna Goodwin, set and costume design by Libby Watson, lighting design by Alex Musgrave, sound design by Nick Lodge and musical supervision by Lee Freeman. Casting is by Harry Blumenau.
It is another Barn Theatre production to travel well beyond Cirencester. The theatre develops work under its Built by Barn banner, and its 2023 staging of I’m Sorry Prime Minister, I Can’t Quite Remember reached the West End and then a UK tour; a tour of The King’s Speech is also booked for 2027.
Iwan Lewis, chief executive and artistic director of the Barn Theatre, said: “The greatest night in rock ‘n’ roll history is going on the road! Seventy years after four legends made music history, their music is still bringing audiences to their feet. We couldn’t be prouder, and the party is only just getting started!”
The Barn staging was warmly received. The Stage gave it four stars and wrote that “under O’Boyle’s assured direction, we get the real people, rather than the legends that they became”; the Daily Mail, also at four stars, found that “the high voltage encore to Jonathan O’Boyle’s production gets the audience to their feet”; and West End Best Friend called it “packed with outstanding musicianship, timeless songs and a cast operating at the top of their game”.
The musical opened on Broadway in 2010 and took three Tony Award nominations, among them Best Musical, with Levi Kreis winning Best Featured Actor in a Musical as Jerry Lee Lewis. Its West End premiere followed at the Noël Coward Theatre in 2011, and it returned to London as part of a UK tour in 2016 and 2017.
