The Tony-winning Cuban musical its producers want to bring to London in 2027 has spent the autumn adding players to its Broadway company rather than winding it down. A West End venue, dates and any London casting are all still to be announced.
Three months after its lead producer said out loud that he wanted a London address for it, Buena Vista Social Club is no closer to naming a West End theatre. It is, however, a good deal busier in New York.
The London end of this is thinner than the headlines have suggested, and it is worth setting out plainly. In June, lead producer Orin Wolf told Deadline that the Broadway production was looking at a West End run in 2027 and that his team were searching for the right theatre. That is still where it stands: no venue, no dates, no London casting, nothing on sale, and no indication of when any of it will be settled.
One name on the producing line-up gives the London talk more substance than a stray remark would otherwise carry. Barbara Broccoli, best known for four decades of James Bond films, is among the Broadway producers, alongside Orin Wolf, John Styles, Atlantic Theater Company, Luis Miranda, LaChanze and John Leguizamo.
What the production is doing in the meantime is enlarging its company at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre rather than trimming it. From 22 October to 29 November, Bernie Williams joins the show as a guitarist in the band — not as a member of the cast, a distinction worth holding on to here.
Williams is a considerable figure in New York for reasons that have nothing to do with theatre: sixteen seasons in centre field for the New York Yankees between 1991 and 2006, four World Series titles, five All-Star selections and four Gold Gloves. He is also a classically trained guitarist whose 2009 album Moving Forward was nominated for a Latin Grammy, and he traces the booking back to a childhood in Puerto Rico.
"I remember my mother listening to this music on Sunday afternoons and it reminds me of wonderful times with my family when I was a kid," Williams said. "The opportunity to play that same music on Broadway in this show is truly a dream come true."
A second former major-league player is already in the building. José "Candelita" Iglesias, who joined the cast as the Narrator on 27 August and who records as a Latin pop artist, has had that run extended by six weeks and now stays until 15 November.
The band is the part of all this a London reader should file away. The production has won five Tony Awards — among them Natalie Venetia Belcon for her featured performance, Jonathan Deans for sound design, Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck for choreography, and Marco Paguia for orchestrations — and a Special Tony Award went to the musicians themselves, the Afro-Cuban group that plays the score live on stage. The cast recording took the 2026 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
None of which is bookable here yet. Both Broadway engagements are limited and finish in November, so neither tells us anything about who might appear in a London company, and it is the musicians rather than the guest names that a transfer would have to bring with it.
