Buena Vista Social Club description
The story behind one of the best-selling world music albums ever made, told with the music played live.
The musical moves between two periods in Havana. In the 1990s, a group of veteran Cuban musicians, most of them long retired, are gathered in a studio to record an album nobody expects much from. In the 1950s, the same people are young, playing in the clubs of a city about to change beyond recognition. The two strands run alongside each other, following four musicians through revolution, exile and decades of silence to the session that made them famous in their seventies and eighties.
Buena Vista Social Club premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company in 2023 and opened on Broadway in 2025, where it won five Tony Awards: Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, Best Sound Design, and a Special Tony Award for its onstage band. The score is built from the 1997 album, with the songs performed live by musicians on stage rather than from a pit.
The book is by Marco Ramirez, and the production is directed by Saheem Ali, with choreography by Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck, the resident choreographer of New York City Ballet whose stage work includes Carousel and Illinoise.
Casting and venue for the London production have not yet been announced.
