Rent description
The groundbreaking musical Rent is back in town, starring Gaten Matarazzo.
Thirty years ago Rent revolutionised musical theatre. Now Jonathan Larson's powerful rock musical, nominated for a load of awards and the winner of others, is back in the West End. This is a brand new production directed by Luke Sheppard, who delighted us with & Juliet and Paddington The Musical, and the brilliant Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things plays Mark.
You'll meet a group of young artists trying to survive in the East Village area of Manhattan, New York City. As they struggle with poverty and addiction, the AIDS epidemic rages. We tune into the action on Christmas Eve as room-mates Mark and Roger are facing eviction. Then they're joined by their HIV positive friend Tom Collins and drag queen Angel as the musical explores love, resilience, and our battle for dignity in challenging times.
This beautiful Pulitzer Prize winning musical reveals what it means to live now, in the moment, whatever is happening. An iconic musical capturing the joy, uncertainty and strength of a generation determined to make every second count, it is as moving as it is exhilarating.
The music, lyrics and book are by Jonathan Larson. Choreography from Tom Jackson Greaves and Set design from David Woodhead join Costume design by Gabriella Slade to create West End musical magic. There's Lighting design by Howard Hudson, Audio production and sound design by Paul Gatehouse, and Video design and cinematography by George Reeve and Nathan Amzi. Make-up and hair design by Jackie Saundercock, UK Casting by Pearson Casting and Musical supervision by Bill Sherman make it special. The Musical director and associate musical supervisor is Katy Richardson, the Intimacy director is Asha Jennings-Grant and the Dialect coach is Joe Trill.
