Funny Girl description

Funny Girl was written by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill. It wowed Broadway in 1964, starring the remarkable Barbara Streisand. Amazingly, this new production marks the first London appearance for the show since the 1966 original, which scored high at the Prince of Wales theatre and also starred Streisand, as did the smash hit movie of the same name.

This time around the action is directed by Michael Mayer. Michael Pavelka has created the set design, the choreography comes courtesy of Lynne Page, lighting design is by Mark Henderson and Richard Brooker is responsible for sound design.

The Olivier Award-winning British actress Sheridan Smith takes the stage by storm as Fanny Bryce, telling the iconic story following the life and times of Fanny, a woman who rose from Lower East Side New York obscurity to become one of Broadway's biggest stars and a protégée of the famous producer Florenz Ziegfield of Ziegfield Follies fame.

On stage Fanny Bryce was an accomplished comedienne, adored by audiences. Off stage things were very different as she endured a doomed relationship with her husband. A string of well-loved show tunes await you including the classics People, You Are Woman, I Am Man and the epic Don't Rain on My Parade.

The show might still be synonymous with Streisand but there's a worthy rival in Sheridan Smith, who was recently awarded an OBE for Services to Drama. Her many glittering stage credits include Bugsy Malone, Into the Woods and the brilliant original London production of Legally Blonde, the role that landed her an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

She has also starred in the wonderful Flare Path, which resulted in another Olivier nomination, and she's no stranger to the small screen with numerous hit TV appearances under her belt.

The Menier Chocolate Factory production sold out in record time to become the venue's fastest-ever selling show. Tickets went on sale at midnight and were all gone by half ten the next morning. If that isn't a sign of a show you really don't want to miss, we don't know what is!
