Side by Side by Sondheim marks its 50th anniversary with a new production at Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate, running from 10 December 2026 to 17 January 2027.
Fifty years after it first opened in London, Side by Side by Sondheim is coming back. Upstairs at the Gatehouse in Highgate stages a new production from Thursday 10 December 2026, with press night on Wednesday 16 December and the final performance on Sunday 17 January 2027.
The revue arrived in 1976 and gathered up the songs Stephen Sondheim had written by then. It turned out to be the halfway point of his life. This revival keeps that early focus, following Sondheim as he becomes Sondheim through well-known numbers and rarer finds from Company, Follies, West Side Story and more.
Four performers carry the whole evening. Each of them sings, dances and plays the piano, and the pace is quick. The four have not yet been named.
The production comes from Chromolume, the company behind Road Show, Pippin and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Amanda Noar directs, with Harry Style as musical director and Isaac Bernier-Doyle as associate director and dramaturg.
The score sets Sondheim’s music and lyrics beside music by Leonard Bernstein, Mary Rodgers, Richard Rodgers and Jule Styne. Ned Sherrin’s original continuity links the numbers, and the show was first produced on Broadway by Harold Prince in association with Ruth Mitchell. It is performed by arrangement with Music Theatre International.
Evening performances start at 7.30pm, with 3pm matinees, including on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The six previews before press night are the cheapest way in, at £22, or £20 with a concession; prices rise from 16 December.
