The first production photographs of Ghosts have been released on the day Richard Eyre's adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen drama reaches its press night at Jermyn Street Theatre.
The pictures, by David Monteith-Hodge, come almost three weeks after the theatre named its company with a set of rehearsal-room images, and they give the first view of the production as audiences at the Jermyn Street Theatre are seeing it: dark panelled walls, a yellow chaise longue and a lamp, with the Alving household in nineteenth-century dress.
Kwame Owusu, the theatre's Carne Deputy Director, directs a cast of five. Flora Montgomery plays Helene Alving and Joe Pitts her son Oswald, alongside Oliver Alvin-Wilson as Pastor Manders, Cecilia Appiah as Regina Engstrand and Peter F. Gardiner as Jacob Engstrand. Our earlier report on the casting of Montgomery and Alvin-Wilson carries the rehearsal photographs.
The play is set in Norway in 1890. Oswald, whom his mother sent away from the family home years earlier, comes back as his mother prepares to open an orphanage marking ten years since his father's death, and their reunion begins to bring long-hidden family secrets to the surface. Eyre has directed the play himself, at the Almeida Theatre and later at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; this time his text passes to another director.
Set design is by Cara Evans, costumes by Natalie Johnson and lighting by Ben Ormerod, with music and sound by Fran Amewudah-Rivers. Casting is by Matthew Dewsbury CDG, and Magnús Thorlacius is assistant director.
Ghosts runs at the Jermyn Street Theatre until 14 November 2026, with press night this evening, Wednesday 14 October, at 7.30pm. Performances are Monday to Saturday at 7.30pm, with 3pm matinees on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and tickets start at £20.
