Max Webster’s Donmar Macbeth heads to Broadway with Anthony Mackie, the actor says

Photo by Marc Brenner Max Webster’s headphone staging of Macbeth, seen at the Donmar Warehouse and the Harold Pinter Theatre with David Tennant, is bound for New York with Anthony Mackie in the title role. The news comes from the actor himself; the producers have yet to announce it.

Mackie, who plays Captain America in the Marvel films, told Deadline on 5 October that he will take on the role on Broadway from spring 2027. By his account rehearsals begin in February 2027, previews follow in late March or early April and the run continues until July, at a theatre still to be named. Nothing has yet come from the production itself, so the timetable is the actor’s rather than a confirmed schedule.

The staging opened at the Donmar Warehouse in late 2023, with Tennant and Cush Jumbo as the Macbeths, a pairing first reported here in May 2023. It then moved into the Harold Pinter Theatre for an 11-week West End season that sold out. In New York the title role passes to Mackie, and Lady Macbeth has still to be cast; he told Deadline he expects “an all-American cast”.

Mackie singled out the production’s defining feature, Gareth Fry’s binaural sound design, in which the audience listens on headphones while the actors speak into microphones. His summary was that “the house comes to the stage”.

It would be his first Broadway role in 16 years, the last being Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane. He has yet to appear on the London stage, and said he hopes to make that debut “sooner or later”.

There is nothing to book yet. The New York details as they stand are on News From Broadway.
