Nobody named in the report has confirmed the project.

Variety reports that a stage musical based on Amy Winehouse is in development for the West End. The trade paper's story, published on 22 October 2026, rests on unnamed sources. The project has not been officially announced.

According to Variety, Broadway producer Catherine Schreiber is understood to be involved. Her producing credits include Cabaret, Rent and the stage version of High School Musical. The report says casting is underway, and that the singer's father, Mitch Winehouse, who oversees her estate, is also believed to be involved.

No title, writer, director, cast, venue or dates have been given. It is also unclear whether the show would tell the story of Winehouse's life or set her songs to a new story, in the way Mamma Mia! does with the music of ABBA. One source quoted by Variety described the project as "the worst kept secret in theater".

Representatives for Schreiber and for Mitch Winehouse did not respond to Variety before its story was published, so none of the people named has commented on the report. Variety notes that the idea of a Winehouse musical has come up before, with Mitch Winehouse reportedly discussing it as far back as 2017.

Winehouse, who was born in London, released two studio albums, Frank in 2003 and Back to Black in 2006, before her death in July 2011 at the age of 27. The second album included Rehab, You Know I'm No Good and its title track, and she won five Grammy Awards in 2008.

Her life was most recently dramatised on screen in Back to Black, the 2024 film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, with Marisa Abela in the title role.
