Yesterday is in development, a stage musical adaptation of the 2019 film of the same name. It's directed by Danny Boyle, and written by Richard Curtis and Emma Freud from the original movie. You can expect the same legendary Beatles songs as the film, including chart-topping icons like Let It Be, A Day in the Life, Hey Jude, and She Loves You. And it'll be on stage in the West End.
The story stars a failing musician, Jack Malik, who is hit by a bus during a global blackout then wakes up in a strange world where nobody has heard of The Beatles. He starts performing their songs, pretending he wrote them, and soon becomes a worldwide sensation. But he starts to feel bad. Should he reveal the truth or carry on fibbing? Will he choose love or fame?
The movie's themes of love, authenticity, and the sacrifices we make for success translate perfectly into musical theatre, as does The Beatles' legendary music. Danny Boyle apparently directed a 2025 workshop for the show. 15 years after his last stage direction role working on the National Theatre's Frankenstein, we can expect something special. Some people predict it could easily become a West End long-runner.
