TRU description
TRU is a solo play that portrays writer Truman Capote at a moment of personal crisis, drawn entirely from his own words.
It is December 1975, and Truman Capote is alone in his New York apartment. He is reeling from the fallout of his most scandalous work, which has cost him the friendship of the elite social circle he had long adored. Across one evening, the play offers an intimate portrait of the writer confronting the consequences of what he has written.
Assembled entirely from Capote's own words, TRU was originally staged in 1989. This production comes to the Menier Chocolate Factory following a critically acclaimed run in New York earlier this year, and marks Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Menier debut. It is a funny and heartbreaking portrait of an artist at his breaking point.
The play is written by Jay Presson Allen (1922-2006), the playwright and screenwriter whose work includes the screenplay for Cabaret and the adaptation of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It is directed by Rob Ashford, an award-winning director and choreographer whose credits include the Olivier Award-winning productions of Anna Christie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Parade. The designer is Paul Farnsworth.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson plays Truman Capote. He won a Tony Award for his performance in the Broadway revival of Take Me Out, and is widely known for playing Mitchell Pritchett across eleven seasons of Modern Family. He recently made his West End debut in Stephen Sondheim's Here We Are at the National Theatre, and is currently playing King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium.
