Let’s do the time warp again... and this time, let’s do it with Jason Donovan! Everyone’s favourite outrageous musical fantasy is back in town as part of a new UK tour and it’s going to be absolutely fantastic. Loud and colourful, crazy and camp, don’t miss Richard O'Brien’s beloved classic.
Jason Donovan’s role comes with a glittering past. Tim Curry aced the role of Frank-n-Furter in the original 1973 London production of O’Brien’s masterpiece. He carried on in the 1974 Roxy production, 1975 Broadway Production and 1975 movie, then Tom Hewitt took over for the 2001 Broadway Revival. David Bedella played Frank in 2015’s live tribute and it was all-change for 2016’s telly movie, where Laverne Cox played Frank as a transgender female. Brilliant.
Now the party is back in the West End following a sell-out Aussie tour, with Donovan playing a part he originally played in theatreland during 1998. It’s great to see him back in the role he aced back then - and these days he’s no stranger to prestigious West End roles.
Fun every step of the way
The plot, whose book, lyrics and music are all by Richard O’Brien, tells the tale of clean-cut teens Brad and his fiancée Janet whose car breaks down outside a scary old mansion with dramatic results. The charming doctor they meet, Dr Frank ’n’ Furter, isn’t what he seems and the fun that follows has inspired more than thirty million of us to turn up, sometimes dress up, and always have the time of our lives.
Looking behind the scenes
Hugh Durrant is the Designer and Sue Blane the Costume Designer, with Nathan M. Wright the Choreographer and Nick Richings the Lighting Designer. Gareth Owen is the Sound Designer, Richard Hartley created the Original Musical Arrangements and Greg Arrowsmith is Music Supervisor. Charlie Ingles is the Musical Director & Additional Arrangements expert, and Christoper Porter is Associate Costume Designer. Darren Ware is Wigs & Make Up Supervisor and Russell Godwin is the Associate Sound Designer, with Andy Barnwell as Orchestral Manager and Martin Mckellan as Dialect Coach.
The show is directed by Christopher Luscombe and the live band comprises Liam Spencer-Smith on guitar, Dan Humphreys on bass, Allan Cox on drums and Dave Webb on the reeds.
