The Illusionist description
Andrew Lloyd Webber's brand new musical The Illusionist premieres in the West End.
The Illusionist takes to the stage for the first time, confirmed by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber himself after months of anticipation. The show has been adapted from the smash hit film of the same name. This new West End spectacular is directed by the award-winning Jamie Lloyd, who gave us Evita and Sunset Boulevard, and produced with Michael Harrison (Hello, Dolly!, The Wizard of Oz, Starlight Express), Webber's long-time collaborator.
The action is set in lovely Vienna, and the year is 1900, a time of profound change. It follows Eisenheim, a talented magician whose spellbinding illusions blur the line between magic and real life. When Eisenheim falls in love with Sophie, who is already engaged to a prince, they begin a secret romance. In an unexpected turn of events, he finds himself using his magic to protect Sophie as they battle the forces that surround them. Illusions, love, and danger become entangled, and mayhem unfolds in the city as the musical explores the boundaries of power, passion, and our desire for freedom.
The book is by Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo, Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), along with lyrics from UK songwriter Bruno Major. Tunes like 'Invincible', 'I Only Came To Say Goodbye', and 'Always Everything To Me' add to the magic of the original story by Steven Millhauser, and Neil Burger's marvellous movie.
