Teeth ‘n’ Smiles description
Teeth 'n' Smiles stars the amazing Rebecca Lucy Taylor, AKA Self Esteem.
Self Esteem is Rebecca Lucy Taylor's stage name, a performer known and loved for her extraordinary music, dazzling solo career and work with the band Slow Club. Now she's starring in the 50th Anniversary revival of David Hare's Teeth 'N' Smiles, back in the West End for 2026, stacked with rock, rebellion and raw emotion. This is her West End play debut, billed as an 'explosive' new production.
First performed way back in 1975,the plot follows lead singer Maggie Frisby, who was once at the forefront of 1960s counterculture way before the New York Dolls, Blondie and Kurt Cobain were a twinkle in the universe's eye. Now broke and disillusioned, her band's dreams of anarchy and rebellion have collapsed but Maggie still stands tall in the wreckage. Fuelled by drink, anger and her remarkable voice, she delivers a powerhouse performance. The ship might be sinking, but the music still roars.
This potent blend of rock 'n' roll energy and uncomfortable truths about society sees the play re-imagined for the 2020s, an entirely fitting social commentary on our troubled times. Written by David Hare and directed by Daniel Raggett, the music comes from Nick Bicât and the lyrics from Tony Bicât, along with fresh new extra music and lyrics by Self Esteem.
Teeth 'n' Smiles tickets give you the chance to see Self Esteem live on stage in a blistering performance of a classic play whose appeal never fades. Mind... blown!
