Starlight Express description
Starlight Express – Rusty the train is back!
This exciting new production of the West End classic musical opens in a specially designed, purpose built Starlight Auditorium at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. It’s on stage from 8th June 2024, and theatreland is delighted to have it back. This is the latest production of Starlight Express, a fully-immersive experience rich in speed, songs, music and storytelling.
Starlight Express dates back to 1984, making 2024 its 40th anniversary. With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, this is the tale of a young, obsolete steam engine Rusty, who enters a race against more modern trains to impress a lovely first-class carriage called Pearl. He has no hope of winning until he’s inspired by the story of the legendary Starlight Express.
There’s a new twist to the ‘80s plot this time around, which you’ll love. As Andrew Lloyd Webber said, “I am thrilled that Starlight Express will be powering down the tracks again. The world’s first truly immersive musical will this time be an experience like no other. Watch out for the big new plot twist and you will discover why steam power is the future of the railway.”
What's the story behind Starlight Express?
Starlight Express tickets take you to the modern version of the musical that delighted audiences at the Apollo Victoria Theatre from 1984, directed at the time by Trevor Nunn and choreographed by the remarkable Arlene Phillips. It was on stage for more than 7,400 performances before it closed in 2002. This time around it’s going to be directed by Luke Sheppard.
This is the second musical by the new partnership between Lloyd Webber and the West End producer Michael Harrison, the first being a new production of Sunset Boulevard, directed by Jamie Lloyd with Nicole Scherzinger starring at the Savoy Theatre.
About Starlight Express
The cast of forty will be confirmed nearer the time. They’ll be zooming around and above the audience on roller skates as they belt out a load of well-loved show tunes like Only He, Make Up My Heart, Light at the End of the Tunnel, AC/DC and the iconic Starlight Express itself.
The creative team supporting Luke Sheppard has been confirmed. The show’s original choreographer Arlene Phillips is creative dramaturg this time around. The choreographer Ashley Nottingham will create brand new choreography, and the set designer is Tim Hatley. The video designer is Andrzej Goulding, the costume designer is Gabriella Slade, the lighting designer is Howard Hudson, sound design is by Gareth Owen, and there’s new orchestrations and musical supervision from Matthew Brind.
