Sister Act description
Sister Act the Musical – Vibrant, soulful and very funny
Did you love the film? Sister Act was hilarious, a brilliant romp of a movie. Now Whoopi Goldberg, who famously played Deloris in the iconic 1992 film of the same name, returns as a new, older Deloris who is much more disruptive, much more irreverent than before. Goldberg is joined by our own legendary funny woman Jennifer Saunders, who plays the Mother Superior. The West End run of Sister Act the Musical contains just 39 performances, a limited run, so don't miss the fun.
The story? Meet the disco diva Deloris Van Cartier, whose world takes a drastic turn when she is witness to a murder committed by her dodgy gangster lover Vince. Taken into a witness protection programme disguised as a nun, Deloris is safe from harm in a quiet, calm California convent.
The Mother Superior at the convent is suspicious of Deloris and keeps an eagle eye on her. But warm-hearted Deloris creates a surprisingly strong bond with her fellow nuns thanks to their shared love of music, and it changes everyone's lives for the better. Deloris helps the convent choir reach amazing new heights, at the same time finding her own lost voice again.
It's funny, it's a riot, it's hugely entertaining, but it's also touching and human, and the music is just superb... pure soul! This fab musical celebrates the power of friendship, the beauty of sisterhood, and the amazingly strong influence of music. Goldberg and Jamie Wilson have reworked the character of Deloris for this production, and we're incredibly fortunate in London to have the real deal, the actual Whoopi Goldberg, performing the same role she made so famous.
Goldberg wowed us with roles in smash hit movies like The Color Purple, Sister Act itself, and of course Ghost. These days she hosts the hugely popular US TV chat show The View, and she's one of those rare actors who has managed to snag all four of the biggest awards in the US entertainment industry: an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony award.
Jennifer Saunders is half of the brilliant comedy duo French and Saunders. She has starred in the iconic TV comedy series Absolutely Fabulous, and in the movie of the same name. She has her West End debut in spring 2020 playing a role in Blithe Spirit at the Duke of York’s, and Sister Act is her first starring role in a West End musical. Following the London run the Sister Act UK tour will star Brenda Edwards, the perfect actor for this excellent re-worked role.
Whoopi Goldberg herself, the 8 time Oscar winning composer Alan Menken and the brilliant producer Jamie Wilson head the creative team, with gorgeous songs inspired by Motown and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The production's book is from Cheri and Bill Steinkellner, and there's more cool book material from Carter Beane.
