Shucked – Original, funny, and a Tony award star
Shucked is a hilarious new Tony-nominated Broadway musical that trialled in Utah. The production proved so much fun it scored a huge hit in New York. Now it’s transferring to London’s West End for 2024. The dates, venue, and cast will be announced nearer the time but for now, all we know is that it’ll run in one of Cameron Mackintosh’s theatres.
The Wall Street Journal calls it ‘flat out hilarious!’ and Cameron Mackintosh himself is by all accounts thrilled it’s on the way over here. In his words, “I’m delighted to confirm that London is going to get Shucked in one of my theatres next year! Shucked is that rarity: a completely original musical and the funniest show since The Book of Mormon, with a terrifically tuneful rollicking country and western score. It’s snuck up on Broadway and is proving to be the most talked about hit of the season. The corn at the heart of Shucked will have you husky with limitless laughter!”
The plot of Shucked?
This colourful, pun-filled comedy stars Maizy and Beau, two locals living in the small Midwestern community of Cobb County. Their wedding is put on hold when the corn crop starts to fail, and Maizy takes off to find a solution, egged on by her whiskey distilling cousin Lulu. In Tampa, Florida, she comes across the dodgy con man Gordy Jackson, whose claims he can help hide a darker side – he needs money to pay off his debts and he has scented an opportunity.
The Broadway production was nominated for 9 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The book is by Tony winner Robert Horn, who penned the book for Tootsie, and the musical score comes from the Grammy Award-winning Nashville song writing team Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, who have written chart-busting songs for a host of US country and western artists. The fun is directed by the Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien of Hairspray fame. All this means the show comes with excellent theatrical credentials.
What's the story behind Shucked?
Shucked was born back in 2022. Tested on stage in Utah then brought to the stage on Broadway, it began previews at the Nederlander Theatre on March 8th 2023 before opening on April 4th this year.
As well as Best Musical, the nine Tony Award nominations were for Best Book for Robert Horn, Best Score for Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, Best Featured Actor for Kevin Cahoon, Best Featured Actor for Alex Newell, Best Scenic Design for Scott Pask, Best Sound Design for John Shivers, Best Direction for Jack O'Brien, and Best Orchestrations for Jason Howland.
