A two-hour comedy in which the audience are the diners, the waiting staff are the disaster, and a three-course meal arrives somewhere in the middle of it.
Basil, Sybil and Manuel run the dining room, greeting guests, taking orders and serving food while the service collapses around them. The audience sit at tables rather than in rows, and the performers work the room throughout, so anyone can be drawn into the action. There is no script in the conventional sense: the show is built on the characters and the atmosphere they create, and the comedy is largely improvised around whatever the room gives them on the night.
Faulty Towers The Dining Experience opened in Brisbane in 1997 and has since played in more than forty countries, with a long-running residency at Sydney Opera House. It arrived in the West End in 2012 at the Charing Cross Hotel and has held a London run ever since, setting West End records as the longest-running immersive experience and the longest-running show based on a television series.
The show was created by Alison Pollard-Mansergh and is produced by Interactive Theatre International, the Australian company behind several long-running interactive dining shows. The characters are loosely adapted from the BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, and the writing takes its cue from that source rather than reproducing it.
Performances run at the President Hotel in Bloomsbury, a short walk from Russell Square station. The evening lasts two hours with no interval and includes a three-course meal in the style of the period, served in character. Lunch and dinner sittings are both available.
