The Royal Shakespeare Company production of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King will open in London in 2027, after a sold-out world premiere season in Stratford-upon-Avon. The venue and dates are still to be announced.
George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King is coming to London in 2027. The Royal Shakespeare Company production transfers after its world premiere run in Stratford-upon-Avon, though the venue and the dates have not yet been set — the producers say both will follow in due course, and there is a sign-up on the show’s own site for people who want the announcement first.
The Stratford season sold out completely. It opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre on Saturday 8 August 2026 and plays its final performance on Saturday 5 September, which gives the transfer a clear run at a London house some time next year.
The play is new, not a stage version of the television series. Duncan Macmillan has adapted it from George R. R. Martin’s novels and Dominic Cooke directs. It covers the final years before the events the books begin with, which puts it in a stretch of Westerosi history the screen adaptations left alone. The production’s own line for it is: “Wars aren’t won by those with most cause, but whose story’s best told.”
Martin, who is credited as creator and executive producer, said: “I had an absolutely splendid time in Stratford upon Avon for the premier and am thrilled the production will be moving to London to share the experience with a wider audience. It promises to be an exhilarating journey.”
Puppetry and movement are by Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell for Lume, with set design by Chloe Lamford, costume design by Georgia McGuinness, lighting by Jon Clark, composition by Will Stuart and sound by Tom Gibbons. Amy Ball is casting director, Bethan Clark fight director and Ingrid Mackinnon intimacy director, with voice and text by Jeannette Nelson, dialect by Hazel Holder and Emily Raymond as associate director.
The wider team is Scarlet Wilderink (associate puppetry and movement), Francesca Roche (period dance consultant), Ti Mikkel (creative consultant), Lenore Gallegos (director’s consultant), Oli Simonon (associate puppetry design), Machiko Weston (associate set design), Alex Berry (associate costume design), Lucía Sánchez Roldan (associate lighting design), Alex Twiselton (associate sound design) and Bellaray Bertrand-Webb (assistant director).
The cast for the London run has not been announced. The production is produced by Simon Painter, Tim Lawson, Mark Manuel, Sir Leonard Blavatnik and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures on behalf of HBO.
