James Graham’s Olivier-winning Punch heads the Belgrade Theatre’s spring 2027 season, which also brings a world premiere written by the theatre’s own artistic director. General booking opens on 10 September.
The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry has set out its spring 2027 season. It is led by Punch, James Graham’s play about a single punch that killed a man and what followed, which won two Olivier Awards this year including Best New Play. It arrives on tour from Tuesday 20 to Saturday 24 April 2027.
The season also carries two world premieres. Nanny of the Maroons, about the 18th-century Jamaican freedom fighter, is written by the Belgrade’s artistic director Corey Campbell with Lucia Haynes and directed by Campbell and Justine Themen, developed through the theatre’s co-creation process with local communities and produced with China Plate. It runs from Friday 18 June to Saturday 3 July 2027. The Unicorn Theatre and the National Theatre bring the premiere of Piers Torday’s The Last Wild, about a boy in a world without animals who finds he can talk to pigeons, from 20 to 24 April.
Also in the drama strand: The Other Side of Murder, a new comedy by Torben Betts for Original Theatre, directed by Philip Franks and starring Rufus Hound, Susie Blake and Carla Mendonça, from 16 to 20 March; A Thing of Beauty, which puts the filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl opposite a BBC interviewer in 1972, on 23 and 24 March; and Remember Romeo, imitating the dog’s take on Shakespeare, on 19 and 20 March.
Dash Arts’ The Reckoning, the staging of verified witness testimony from the war in Ukraine that we reported on this week, opens the tour in Coventry from 28 to 30 January. Each performance is followed by a five-minute reflection from a journalist, lawyer or someone with direct experience of the conflict, with Ukrainian salad served to the audience.
For families there is The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show from 3 to 5 June, Vamos Theatre’s wordless Finding Joy on 25 and 26 February, marking the company’s 21st year, and Oddsocks turning Macbeth into a comedy from 14 to 16 June. Sonia Sabri’s non-verbal dance-theatre piece Noori and her Fantastical World plays 19 and 20 February.
Campbell and interim chief executive Emma Flatley said they were “especially proud to be developing and premiering Nanny of the Maroons through our co-creation process, continuing our commitment to making ambitious new work with and for our communities here in Coventry”.
The season runs alongside a programme of comedy, opera and music, including two nights from the Ukrainian National Opera on 8 and 9 February.
