Big the Musical – A popular movie brought to the stage

Big the movie was special, very special. The delightful Tom Hanks played the young Josh Baskin to perfection, a completely convincing portrayal of a young boy trapped in a man's body. The story charmed a generation, then charmed a few more with its kooky plot and super-sweet, happy-sad ending. It's one of those films everybody loves, and it won numerous awards.

Now this enduringly popular story is back, this time on the stage for its West End debut. Let's give a large, generous, warm welcome to Big the Musical, eagerly awaited and now due at the Dominion theatre in September 2019 for just nine weeks. Don't miss the fun!

The story? Twelve year old Josh Baskin is bored, bored, bored. He thinks it's rubbish being twelve and he can't wait to be a grown up. When he comes across a mysterious magical fairground attraction and makes a wish, he cannot believe it actually comes true. One moment he's a boy, the next he's a thirty year old man with a huge grown-up body he doesn't recognise, and he's set loose to make his own way in the mysterious and illogical adult world.

When Josh gets a job with the toymakers MacMillen, he ends up testing the new toys. If you've seen the movie this is the famous piano bit, the fantastic scene where he dances on giant piano keys on the floor and wows the boss as well as the female colleague who ends up falling in love with him. But while life as a big person is fun for a while, Josh soon starts to miss the simple life he led as a boy, and he's desperate to find a way back.

The original 1996 musical, featuring choreography by Susan Stroman, ran for less than two hundred performances and was nominated for five Tony Awards. This is a brand new production of the Broadway musical original, which has already wowed audiences at the Theatre Royal Plymouth and the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin.

Big the Musical features music by David Shire and lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. This new production is directed and choreographed by Morgan Young. Jay McGuiness from the British-Irish boyband, The Wanted, reprises his hit role as Josh from the show's smash-hit runs in Plymouth and Dublin.
