The Judas Kiss at the Duke of York's

The respected actor Rupert Everett confesses to a lifetime’s love, affection, respect and fascination for Oscar Wilde, and it shines through in his superb performance covering key moments in the great man’s tragic life. This is a top quality production of David Hare’s about Oscar Wilde’s doomed relationship with the aristocratic Lord Alfred Douglas, AKA Bosie, and it’s perfectly un-missable.

The Judas Kiss – The destructive potential of romantic love

Rupert Everett plays a seminal role in this excellent production’s success, a play that has transferred from the Hampstead Theatre to London’s glittering West End for a theatreland run that’s set to turn heads and win hearts.

Everett plays the contrary, hugely talented, risk-taking Wilde to perfection and his affection for the man shines through. The play deals with the author’s ill-fated relationship with the sensitive poet, writer and third son of John Douglas, the Ninth Marquess of Queensberry. Officially Lord Alfred Douglas but affectionately nicknamed Bosie, he was best known for stealing Wilde’s heart to become his great friend and ultimately his lover.

Tipped as a theatrical masterpiece in the making, Everett plays Wilde with all the considerable sensitivity, style and verve at his disposal, creating a believable picture of Wilde’s character which shines through every carefully-orchestrated scene. It’s altogether an excellent piece of work.

The story? It’s 1895 and Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is enjoying triumph and acclaim. But he is treading very dangerous ground and when h’s forced to choose between his beloved Bosie and freedom, Wilde chooses a deadly path that inevitably ends in disaster. Before long Wilde finds himself rejected, vilified and imprisoned, betrayed by the man he loves and to all intents and purposes, destroyed.

This play deals sensitively, intelligently and passionately with the two ‘crossroads’ moments in Wilde’s life when different decisions might have seen his life end very differently. It is poignant and serious, an exquisite play that covers Wilde’s tragedy and betrayal with both verve and affection. Heart-breaking… but in a good way!

Because the play covers adult themes, with adult scenes throughout, it’s not suitable for youngsters.
