Working Men description
Working Men is a new play about three men, one routine site visit to a council estate and a day that could change everything.
A quantity surveyor, a building contractor and a project manager walk onto a council estate. What starts as another routine site visit could become the day that defines the rest of their lives, and a defining day for an estate already in decline. As one line in the play puts it: 'They want for working men to betray working men so they can say it wasn't them.'
The play receives its world premiere in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre. It won the George Devine Award, the annual prize for emerging playwrights named after the Royal Court's founding artistic director, and was first featured in the Royal Court's Open Submissions Festival, which showcases new writers chosen from the thousands of scripts the theatre reads every year. The production is recommended for ages 14+ and contains depictions of a major incident and a structural disaster, and discussion of corporate manslaughter and racism.
Working Men is written by Benjamin Kuffuor, whose play won the George Devine Award ahead of its full production at the Royal Court. Casting is by Saffeya Shebli.
