War Face description
War Face is a new play about British Army veterans and the lives that military service has shaped.
At the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which has been home to army veterans known as the Chelsea Pensioners since the late 17th century, a community of former soldiers reflect on their lives in and after the army. Weaving together real experiences from across generations, the play looks beyond the uniform at the people who wore it, with humour and frankness.
The play receives its world premiere in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court Theatre. It was created with serving and retired soldiers in collaboration with the Chelsea Pensioners, and is performed by a company made up of army veterans and actors. Commissioned by the Genesis Foundation through the Genesis Next Generation Programme at the Royal Court, it is co-produced with Orange Juice Productions. The production is recommended for ages 14+.
Georgie Dettmer wrote the play with the company. A Stage Debut Award winner, she has been named the Royal Court's 2027 Jerwood New Playwright, an accolade supported by the Jerwood Foundation in its 50th anniversary year. She is reunited with director Jess Edwards, with whom she made the award-winning Royal Court production Are You Watching?
