This is the Puccini opera that features the beloved song Nessun dorma, which famously opened the Italia 1990 World Cup games and brought opera to millions. Puccini's captivating tale of love and revenge is back with a glittering new production, with Anna Netrebko, Maida Hundeling and Anna Pirozzi sharing the lead role. It's sung in Italian with English captions and translations shown on screens around the venue.
Puccini died before finishing the opera, which was completed by Franco Alfano two years later to premier in 1926 at Milan's La Scala. You'll meet the lovely but cold-hearted Princess Turandot, who won't marry unless her suitor can crack three tricky riddles. Those who fail are executed, but when a mysterious prince turns up, the balance of power shifts forever.
Inspired by Chinese and Italian theatre, this production evokes a mythical Peking, crafted perfectly by Andrei Șerban into a 'blazing masterpiece'. Along with Netrebko, Hundeling and Pirozzi the cast includes Yusif Eyvazov, Arsen Soghomonyan and Roberto Alagna, who share the role of Calaf.
