Tosca description
A young couple, a violent predator and a story to die for – it's Tosca.
Welcome to Rome, a city devastated by war. Tosca, Puccini's brilliant operatic thriller, is back in a new production described as 'epic', complete with brand new staging. It's sung in Italian with English captions and subtitles on screens, making it an experience everyone can enjoy.
The lovers Floria Tosca and Mario Cavaradossi are dedicated to their art. When Mario lends a helping hand to an escaped prisoner, the couple makes a deadly enemy of the Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia, leaving them at his mercy. Tosca is forced to sleep with Scarpia, who she detests, to save the man she adores. Will she succeed?
Tosca premiered in Rome in 1900 at a time of serious political unrest, leaving people worried that violence would erupt at the venue. It didn't, and while the critics didn't like the violence, Tosca fast became a huge hit with the public. It still is. This time around, it's conducted by new Music Director Jakub Hrůša and directed by Oliver Mears, with a stellar cast including sopranos Anna Netrebko and Aleksandra Kurzak playing Tosca, tenor Freddie De Tommaso as Cavaradossi, and bass-baritone Gerald Finley as the evil Scarpia. Jakub Hrůša conducts his first new production as Music Director at The Royal Opera, and the setting is contemporary Rome.
