The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry description
A sell-out at Chichester Festival, now The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Musical is in London for 2026.
Fancy a five-star West End musical that'll leave you feeling uplifted and joyful? The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry musical is a funny, profound, and deeply moving new musical, adapted by Rachel Joyce from her bestselling book of the same name. A gorgeous score by Passenger (Let Her Go) seals the deal.
Rachel Joyce's beloved book was published in 2012, her first novel. Longlisted for the year's Man Booker Prize and winning the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year, it sold more hardback copies that year than any other novel by a new writer. The 2023 film scored another huge hit, starring Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton.
This wonderfully warm-hearted musical reminds us there's always a second shot at happiness. You'll meet Harold Fry, who lives quietly and uneventfully in deepest Devon with his wife. When he gets a letter from a long-lost friend who's dying, he only means to send a sympathetic note. But his short walk to the post box carries on through Devon’s narrow lanes all the way to Scotland, eventually ending on the Scottish border, in the windy streets of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Meanwhile, back at home, his wife Maureen starts a journey of her own. Will Harold and Maureen reconnect afterwards? Themes of redemption, second chances and the kindness of strangers make the story memorable, and the music is the icing on the cake.
This is an adaptation by Rachel Joyce, Peter Darling and Katy Rudd, (Ballet Shoes, The Ocean at the End of the Lane) who also directs. The stars are Mark Addy (The Full Monty, The Rig, Game of Thrones) who plays Harold, and Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George, Hello, Dolly) who plays Maureen. The show is designed by Samuel Wyer and choreographed by Tom Jackson Greaves. The Arrangement, Orchestration and Additional Music come from Jeremy Holland-Smith and the Musical Supervisor is Phil Bateman, who also provides additional music. There's Lighting Design by Paule Constable, Sound Design by Ian Dickinson and Gareth Tucker for Autograph, and Video Design by Ash J Woodward. The Casting Director is Anna Cooper CDG, and the Musical Director is Chris Poon.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry Musical tickets take you on a joyous journey, leaving you feeling happy, hopeful, and inspired.
