The Producers description
Two Broadway producers work out that a flop can make more money than a hit, provided it fails quickly enough.
Max Bialystock, a producer long past his best, discovers through his timid accountant Leo Bloom that a show which closes on opening night could leave them with the surplus investment. All they need is the worst play ever written, the worst director available and a cast to match. They settle on Springtime for Hitler, hire a director whose taste runs to sequins, and watch in horror as the audience decides it is a masterpiece.
The Producers is the first major London revival of the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2001 and won twelve Tony Awards, still the record for a single production. This staging began at the Menier Chocolate Factory before transferring to the Garrick Theatre, and is now in its final West End season. The Sunday Express gave it five stars, citing Brooks's "genius for hammily catchy melodies and taboo-busting gags".
The music and lyrics are by Mel Brooks, who wrote the book with Thomas Meehan, adapting his own 1967 film. The original Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman. This revival is directed by Patrick Marber, the playwright of Closer and director of Leopoldstadt.
Andy Nyman plays Max Bialystock and Marc Antolin plays Leo Bloom, both reprising their roles from the Menier run, with Trevor Ashley as Roger DeBris, Raj Ghatak as Carmen Ghia, Harry Morrison as Franz Liebkind and Joanna Woodward as Ulla.
Book now, while the worst show on Broadway is still the best night out in London.
