Twenty-four teenagers are sent into an arena and told that only one comes out.
In the nation of Panem, the Capitol holds an annual televised contest in which two tributes from each district fight to the death. When her younger sister's name is drawn, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her place. Alongside Peeta Mellark, the other tribute from District 12, she is taken to the Capitol, dressed and coached for the cameras, and then sent into the arena, where staying alive means being watched by an audience that decides who is worth saving.
The Hunger Games: On Stage is the first stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins's novel and opened in November 2025 at Troubadour Canary Wharf Theatre, a 1,200-seat venue built in the round specifically for this production. John Malkovich appears as President Snow on screen, and the staging makes heavy use of video, illusion and stage combat to put the arena around the audience.
The adaptation is by Conor McPherson, the playwright behind The Weir and Girl from the North Country, and it is directed by Matthew Dunster, whose productions include 2:22 A Ghost Story and Hangmen. Miriam Buether designed the set and auditorium, with costumes by Moi Tran, lighting by Lucy Carter, sound by Ian Dickinson, video by Tal Rosner, movement by Charlotte Broom, illusions by Chris Fisher and music by James Maloney.
Mia Carragher plays Katniss Everdeen and Euan Garrett plays Peeta, with Joshua Lacey as Haymitch, Tristan Waterson as Gale, Ruth Everett as Effie Trinket, Stavros Demetraki as Caesar Flickerman and Nathan Ives-Moiba as Cinna.
