The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? description
Wolf Hall star Damian Lewis plays the man who falls truly, madly and deeply in love with Sylvia, the goat. This wonderfully clever and undoubtedly crazy production won a Tony Award for Best New Play when it premièred on Broadway in 2002, starring Bill Pullman. It won a coveted Drama Desk Award in 2002 for Outstanding New Play as well as being nominated for several more.
2002 saw it nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play, a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Play, and another Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Play. In 2003 it was in the news again, nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In 2006 it was nominated for the Helpmann Award for Best Play. Now it's back in the West End in spring 2017, this time directed by the hugely talented Ian Rickson.
The plot explores what happens to a couple and their teenage son when the father, played by Lewis, falls head over heels in love with a goat. Middle aged Martin is an award winning architect who, until now, has lived an ordinary life with his beloved wife and sensitive gay son. When Martin confesses to his best friend that he's fallen in love with the goat, who is called Sylvia, a series of catastrophic events kick off that will ultimately smash his family to pieces.
The playwright challenges the meaning and nature of social taboos and explores the limits of a supposedly liberal society, ultimately tasking the audience with questioning their own morals. It's wonderfully rich and creative, bringing in plenty of typical complex Albee wordplay to support his arguments.
Albee is best known for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which is also due to be revived in 2017 with Imelda Staunton starring. He died recently aged 88. The star of the show Damian Lewis was last in London's West End in 2015 in David Mamet's exceptional American Buffalo. He caused a stir playing the young King Henry 8th in Wolf Hall. Now he's due to smash the role of Martin in his own unique way, and the excitement is mounting.
The show will be produced by Matthew Byam Shaw, Nia Janis and Nick Salmon for Playful Productions, with Tom Kirdahy and Hunter Arnold.
