The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button description

It captured hearts and minds and sold out at the Southwark Playhouse theatre. Now this wonderful foot-stomping, award-winning musical is due in theatreland with a breathtaking soundtrack brought to life by an ensemble of actor-musicians.

Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 short story reborn

US author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic short story has been relocated to a fishing village on the north coast of Cornwall by the writing team Jethro Compton and Darren Clark. So what’s the plot? There’s a full moon outside and something bizarre is about to happen. Benjamin Button is born old and his life’s going to be spent getting younger by the day. Will Benjamin find his place in the world?

There follows an extraordinary journey through a timeless tale of a love that survives despite everything, an enchantingly beautiful new musical that’s as far from ‘ordinary’ as it gets. It’s no surprise the show won Best Musical Theatre Production at the 2024 Off West End Awards.

Already an award-winner

The book and lyrics come from Jethro Compton and the music and lyrics from Darren Clark, produced by ATG Productions, Gary Beestone Associates, Gavin Kalin Productions, Eilene Davidson Productions, Umeda Arts Theater, and Jethro Compton Productions.

So what’s the story behind the story?

The story was transformed into a 2008 romantic fantasy movie directed by David Fincher with a plot from Eric Roth and Robin Swicord, loosely based on Fitzgerald’s 1922 original. The film starred Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton and the producer was Ray Stark, who’d been trying to get the project off the ground since the 1980s.

The movie enjoyed widespread critical acclaim and grossed vast amounts at the box office, receiving 13 Academy Award nominations at the 81st ceremony including Best Picture, Best Director for Fincher, Best Actor for Pitt, and Best Supporting Actress for Taraji P. Henson. It ultimately won three, for Best Art Direction, Best Makeup, and Best Visual Effects.

Prepare to be charmed

The stage version is set to become an equally big hit thanks to the charming storyline, wonderful music and sheer, magical on-stage spectacle. It may have started life as a ‘scrappy little show with a big heart’ according to the director Jethro Compton, but audiences have helped it grow into something West End-ready that’s set to become as special as the film.
