The Code description
The Code is a tense, gritty play set in the seedy underbelly of 1950s Hollywood.
Southwark Playhouse Borough is wonderfully intimate. The Code comes from the acclaimed playwright Michael McKeever. And this is the play's UK premiere, a new production on stage for a strictly limited season. All the stars are aligned for a production to remember.
The famously outspoken actor Tallulah Bankhead pops in to visit her old friend, ex-movie idol Billy Haines. Power-hungry agent Henry Willson is there along with his latest discovery, the ridiculously handsome Chad Manford. As the Martinis flow, tensions rise, memories surface, and secrets unfold. In this crazy town, where image is everything, the only side you can afford to show is the socially acceptable side. Dare any of them share the truth about themselves?
Expect an emotional, witty story starring real-life characters who've been given a fictional opportunity to explore their identities, what ambition means, where their loyalties lie, and whether it's really possible to survive, never mind thrive in Hollywood. It's a top choice for anyone who loves queer history, is intrigued by the history of the silver screen, or simply enjoys sharp, clever storytelling.
Olivier winner Tracie Bennett (Hairspray, Follies, Here We Are), Solomon Davy (Grease, Hairspray), Nick Blakeley (Underdog: The Other Brontë, Father Brown), and John Partridge (EastEnders, Everybody's Talking About Jamie) play the four characters. Tony Award nominee Christopher Renshaw (The King and I, We Will Rock You) directs. Set and costume design is by Ethan Cheek, with Lighting design by Jack Weir and Casting by Nicholas Hockaday.
Buy The Code tickets early to enjoy a four-handed play exploring the dark side of 1950s Hollywood, glamorous and glittery from the outside but unforgiving behind the scenes.
