The Children description
Love your drama dark and funny? Don't miss The Children, starring Meera Syal.
Get ready for a bold, disturbing, amusing story exploring secrets, loyalty and legacy. The Children introduces Hazel and Robin, retired nuclear scientists and survivors of a disaster, who are struggling to build a worthwhile life on the border of a radiation exclusion zone. It stars Olivier-nominated actor Meera Syal (A Tupperware of Ashes, Noises Off) as Hazel. Having achieved 'modern classic' status in just a decade, the themes of accountability between the generations and the environmental crisis caused by older people is just as relevant as ever. It also happens to be really funny as well as moving.
Hazel keeps up her yoga skills and Robin is busy brewing booze out of parsnips, both doing whatever they can to stay sane and normal, clinging to reality by the skin of their teeth. Then their old colleague Rose turns up out of the blue, bringing buried memories, secrets, and a suggestion that rocks their world.
This thrilling drama by Lucy Kirkwood is directed by the Artistic Director of Lyric Hammersmith Theatre Rachel O'Riordan and celebrates the play's tenth birthday. The creative team includes Set and Costume Design by Gary McCann, Lighting Design by Anna Watson, and Sound Design by Holly Khan.
