The Apology description
The Apology is a new play by V, formerly known as Eve Ensler, in which she summons her dead father to account for the abuse he inflicted on her as a child.
Described as an act of theatrical imagination, the play takes the form of a ritual. V conjures her father on stage and confronts him with what he did, in a piece dedicated to all the women who are still waiting for an apology. She performs alongside Tobias Menzies and a choral ensemble.
The Apology is a world premiere in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court Theatre, produced by the Royal Court and Complicité in association with Brian and Dayna Lee and Tectonic Theater Project. It marks Complicité's return to the Royal Court after its award-winning production of Ionesco's The Chairs, translated by Martin Crimp, and its 2017 adaptation of Robert Evans' memoir The Kid Stays in the Picture. The production is recommended for ages 14+ and contains discussion of childhood abuse and domestic violence.
The play is written by V, the Tony and Obie Award-winning author of The Vagina Monologues. It is directed by Simon McBurney, Artistic Director of Complicité, whose productions include The Encounter, Mnemonic and Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. The design is by Es Devlin.
Emmy Award winner Tobias Menzies, known for playing Prince Philip in The Crown, stars opposite V herself. His screen work also includes Outlander and Game of Thrones.
Book now for The Apology, a world premiere in which V turns her own history into a theatrical reckoning.
