Sweetmeats description
Karim Khan's brilliant Sweetmeats lights up the Bush Theatre's Holloway venue.
Treat yourself to a totally charming world premiere. Sweetmeats, fresh from the award-winning writer Karim Khan, tells a unique love story.
Hema hasn't been able to eat sweet stuff for years. The type 2 diabetes course she's on is meant to help her get healthier, and it's starting to bear fruit. Then she meets lively Liaquat, who persuades her to break the rules and enjoy life to the full. In return, Hema helps Liaquat get his own health under control. Both of them thought they were far too old for romance, but the unlikely pair grows ever-closer as their feelings blossom into a beautiful love story to tug at your heartstrings.
An award-winning playwright and screenwriter from Oxford, Karim Khan's Brown Boys Swim sold out at 2022's Edinburgh Fringe, transferring to Soho Theatre and touring the UK before being optioned by A24. Currently developing new work with the Royal Court, RSC, National Theatre, and Soho Theatre, his stage credits include Before the Millennium, Corrosive, Beyond Shame, and Orange Juice. He has also written episodes for TV's All Creatures Great and Small, winning Best Debut at 2023's Edinburgh TV Festival.
The show is directed by Tara Theatre Artistic Director Natasha Kathi-Chandra. Aldo Vázquez is the Set and Costume Designer, with Simeon Miller as the Lighting Designer, Mateus Daniel as the Movement Director, and the Composer Amrit Kaur Lohia. Malena Arcucci is the Costume Supervisor, Chloe Blake is the Casting Director, and Chloe Stally-Gibson is Production Manager. Jo Alexander, Company Stage Manager on book, and Shuyin Stella Wang, Assistant Stage Manager, complete the creative team.
