Swan Lake - Royal Ballet and Opera description
Swan Lake returns to the Royal Opera House in Liam Scarlett's production for The Royal Ballet, set to Tchaikovsky's score.
Princess Odette lives under a curse cast by the sorcerer Von Rothbart, who has turned her into a swan by day. Only a pledge of eternal love can break the spell. When Prince Siegfried meets her by the lake, he is drawn to her at once and vows to set her free. Von Rothbart has other plans, and at the palace ball he presents Odile, a double who deceives the prince and puts the lovers' future at risk.
Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky's first score for ballet. It was poorly received at its premiere in 1877, and it was the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that secured its place in the repertory. The ballet has been part of The Royal Ballet's repertory since 1934. This staging, first seen in 2018, stays faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text, setting the formal palace scenes against the lakeside scenes for the corps de ballet of swans.
The choreography is by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with additional choreography by Liam Scarlett and Frederick Ashton. The production is by Liam Scarlett, with designs by John Macfarlane and lighting by David Finn. Koen Kessels and Martin Georgiev conduct.
The Royal Ballet's Principals share the leading roles across the run. Odette/Odile is danced by Marianela Nuñez, Natalia Osipova, Francesca Hayward, Fumi Kaneko, Yasmine Naghdi, Anna Rose O'Sullivan, Akane Takada and Mayara Magri, among others. Prince Siegfried is danced by Vadim Muntagirov, Steven McRae, Matthew Ball, Marcelino Sambé, William Bracewell, Reece Clarke, Cesar Corrales, Patricio Revé, Calvin Richardson and Joseph Sissens, among others.
Book now for Tchaikovsky's love story of a cursed princess and a deceived prince, danced by The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House.
